How to care for your Satin Pothos
Everything you need to keep your Satin Pothos healthy: watering, light, humidity, feeding, repotting and pruning.
Scindapsus pictus is a tropical vine native to Southeast Asia, often confused with the classic pothos (Epipremnum aureum) but belonging to a distinct genus. Its heart-shaped leaves, matte dark green and velvety to the touch, are adorned with irregular silvery spots and splashes that give it a sophisticated, unique appearance. It is a trailing or climbing plant perfect for high shelves or hanging baskets. Undemanding, it easily forgives missed waterings and adapts to various light levels.
Watering your Satin Pothos
Every 7 days
Allow the substrate to partially dry between waterings. Satin pothos tolerates a mild missed watering better than overwatering. Water deeply then allow to drain well.
How to know it needs water
- Substrate dry in the top 3–4 cm
- Leaves beginning to curl slightly
- Pot noticeably lighter
How much light a Satin Pothos needs
Bright indirect light
Moderate to bright indirect light. Silver markings are more pronounced in bright light. Tolerates low-light situations but the patterns will fade.
- Direct sun tolerated
- 0 to 2 h a day
- Orientations that suit it
- North, North-east, East, South-east, South, South-west, West, North-west
Humidity and misting
50–70 %
50–70% Mist the foliage occasionally. Satin pothos tolerates relatively dry air but leaves will be more attractive with moderate humidity.
Feeding and fertiliser
Every 14 days
Fertilize every 2 weeks from March to September. Stop in winter. Satin pothos has modest nutrient requirements but regular fertilization encourages vigorous growth.
- Recommended feed
- Liquid fertilizer for foliage plants, diluted to half dose. · 2-1-2
Repotting your Satin Pothos
Every 24 months
Use a light, aerated blend: compost + perlite + bark. Do not over-pot. Satin pothos appreciates being slightly root-bound.
- When
- Spring (April–May)
- Potting mix
- All-purpose potting mix
- Mix in
- perlite, coco fibre, pine bark
The tell-tale signs
- Roots emerging from drainage holes
- Growth slowing
- Roots coiling at the base of the pot
Pruning your Satin Pothos
When stems become too long or bare at the base. Year-round as needed. Cut stems above a node to encourage branching. Cut portions root easily in water or in sphagnum. Remove damaged leaves.
Through the year
Watering is not set once and for all: it follows the light and the growth. Allow 8 days between waterings in the depth of winter, against 6 in the growing season.

All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals. Toxic to pets and humans. Ingestion causes oral irritation, hypersalivation, and nausea.
Good to know
- Satin pothos is not a true pothos (Epipremnum) despite its nickname: it belongs to a different genus within the same Araceae family.
- The silvery spots on its leaves are not paint: they are caused by tiny air pockets beneath the epidermis that reflect light.
